What Do you call this Season: Fall or Autum?
What do you call the season that comes after summer? Americans typically say “fall” more often than “autumn.” Dictionary.com says “harvest” was the first name for the season, but fell out of favor in the 1300s, with “autumn” being the more popular name to use. The term “fall” likely comes from the phrase “the fall of the leaves” or “falling leaves,” phrases poets liked. Mirriam-Webster says people started shortening the name of the season to “fall” in the 1600s. Also, British English and American English tend to differ, and in the 1800s the British settled on “autumn” as the word of choice, while in the U.S. we chose “fall.” Read more from Fox News here.
